3 Natural Ways to Support Your Digestive System

A well-functioning digestive system relies on a few things working together: a balanced population of gut bacteria, sufficient digestive enzymes, and an overall gut environment that supports both.

When digestion feels off - bloating, irregularity, upset after travel, or difficulty with certain foods - it's often one or more of these areas asking for a bit of extra support.

Digestive support isn't about a single fix; it works best when it addresses the different parts of the system together. Below, we look at three of the main ways digestion can be supported naturally - feeding beneficial bacteria, supporting enzyme activity, and using traditional botanicals to help maintain a balanced gut environment.

1. Supporting the beneficial bacteria in the gut

Your large intestine is home to trillions of bacteria that ferment fibre, produce certain vitamins, and play a central role in immune health. Keeping this community balanced and diverse is one of the most impactful things you can do for digestion overall. This matters most during periods when the natural balance of gut bacteria is most likely to be disrupted, such as a course of antibiotics, travel, or periods of stress (1).

How it can be supported:

  • Fermented foods such as live yoghurt, kefir, sauerkraut, and kimchi naturally introduce beneficial bacteria.
  • Fibre-rich vegetables, fruits, and wholegrains feed the bacteria already living in your gut (sometimes called "prebiotic" foods).
  • A well-formulated probiotic supplement, containing well-researched live bacterial strains, can help replenish and maintain this balance. It is particularly useful after antibiotics use or during travel (2,3).

2. Supporting natural enzyme activity

The pancreas releases a range of digestive enzymes such as proteases, lipase and amylase. Each of these are responsible for breaking down a specific type of food. When enzyme activity doesn't quite keep pace with what's being eaten, the result is often that heavy, bloated feeling, or difficulty tolerating certain foods. Enzyme production naturally varies between individuals and can decline with age, be affected by chronic stress, or simply not match a particularly rich or varied diet (4).

3. Using traditional botanicals for gut balance

Long before modern supplements existed, various cultures relied on aromatic herbs and plant compounds to support digestive comfort. There is a growing body of modern research behind some of this traditional use. These botanicals are typically less about replacing a single nutrient and more about supporting the overall gut environment (7). Some of the most well-established examples include:

  • Oregano - valued for its role in supporting gastrointestinal comfort, and rich in phenolic compounds (including rosmarinic acid) that give it notable antioxidant properties.
  • Thyme - a traditional digestive herb, also historically associated with supporting the respiratory tract (8,9).
  • Caprylic acid - a naturally occurring fatty acid (found in foods like coconut) often used to help maintain a healthy gut environment.
  • Wormwood - a traditional bitter herb long associated with supporting normal digestive function and comfort after eating (10,11).

These are often combined into a single complex, since their traditional roles complement one another, offering broad support rather than a single, narrow mechanism.

 

Putting the three together 

Rather than thinking of these as three separate options, it's helpful to think of them as three parts of the same system:

  • Bacteria ferment and process what enzymes and the gut haven't fully broken down.
  • Enzymes ensure food is broken down efficiently before it reaches the colon.
  • Botanicals help maintain a balanced overall gut environment in which the other two can function well.

Supporting all three, through diet, lifestyle, and where appropriate, targeted supplementation tends to be far more effective than focusing on just one in isolation.

A few general tips

  • Stay hydrated - water plays a key role in nearly every stage of digestion.
  • Eat a varied, fibre-rich diet to feed a diverse range of gut bacteria.

  • Introduce any new supplement gradually and give your body a few weeks to respond.
