When flu season arrives, most advice focuses on your lungs, your immune system, and your vitamin D levels. But there is another ecosystem quietly working as your body's first line of defence every single day. One that faces its own set of seasonal challenges. And one that most flu season content never thinks to mention.

The microbiome you probably never think about

Did you know your skin is not a single microbiome? The oily environment around your face, the moist areas such as your armpits, and the relatively dry skin on your forearms all provide completely different conditions for microorganisms. Your skin is a collection of microbial ecosystems, each adapted to the particular environment of that part of your body.2

Living across the surface of your skin is a complex community of bacteria, fungi, and other microorganisms known as the skin microbiome. Together with the skin itself, these microbes form part of an important protective barrier between you and the outside world. Research shows that the skin microbiome interacts with skin cells and the immune system, contributing to barrier function and protection against potentially harmful microbes.1

What winter actually does to your skin ecosystem

The flu season dilemma most people feel but nobody resolves

Handwashing is one of the most effective ways to reduce the spread of viruses. The NHS recommends washing your hands regularly with soap and water, including after coughing, sneezing, or blowing your nose.5 This is not up for debate.

But frequent washing, particularly with hot water or harsh products, contributes to the dryness and irritation that is already being caused by cold weather and indoor heating. The answer is not to wash less. It is to protect the barrier while maintaining good hygiene.

The practical resolution is simple: wash your hands consistently and moisturise afterwards. The NHS recommends emollients for dry or irritated skin because they help trap moisture and protect the skin barrier.6 This is not about feeding your skin bacteria with a specialist product. It is about maintaining the environment in which your skin and its microbial community normally function.

The same principle applies to hand sanitiser. Alcohol based sanitiser is useful when soap and water are not available, but frequent use can leave hands feeling dry or irritated. Moisturising regularly is the straightforward counterbalance.

Does your skin microbiome protect you from flu?

Here is where it is important to be honest about what the science does and does not show.

During flu season, the biggest challenge for your skin is probably not the flu virus itself. It is the combination of cold weather, dry air, heating, and frequent handwashing that disrupts the barrier your skin microbiome calls home.

Keep washing your hands. Keep them moisturised. Be gentle with your skin.

And remember that supporting your microbiome does not mean buying another product. Sometimes looking after the ecosystem you already have simply means protecting the environment in which it lives.
