It's not that the drug harms your teeth directly, there's no evidence of that. - Bad breath: reduced saliva can impair the mouth's natural cleansing and odour-control mechanisms, while reflux, nausea and vomiting may provide additional contributors to halitosis.
- Increased plaque and higher cavity risk: saliva normally helps clear food debris, buffer acids and protect tooth surfaces, so reduced salivary flow may increase susceptibility to plaque accumulation and dental caries.
- Gum inflammation: changes in saliva, nutrition and oral hygiene could potentially influence periodontal health, although the direct relationship between GLP-1 medicines and gum disease is still being investigated.
- Enamel erosion and sensitivity: nausea, vomiting and reflux can expose teeth to gastric acid, contributing to erosive tooth wear and sensitivity. This is different from ordinary tooth decay.
- Taste changes: altered or unpleasant taste, including metallic or bitter tastes, has been reported with GLP-1 medicines. Studies suggest GLP-1 signalling may influence taste perception, although the precise mechanism is not yet understood (4,9).
